Swim, Bike, Run… another Tri done!
Ran the Udhailiyah Sprint Tri today. SO much fun! It is a cold and windy day here. The wind is no surprise, but the cold is! It was nice, though. We didn’t get too hot.
On our camp, there is a tri training group that meets every Tuesday at 4:15. I don’t have anyone that can watch all three girls at 4:15 so I never get to work out with them. Instead, I take the girls on a bike ride along the track the tri group trains and we cheer them on. Cheesy, but fun.
On camp, we have a biking group that rides 80+Km rides multiple times each week. There is a running group who has brought 8 people to 4 marathons since December. This is also the camp where people say things like “I only run about an 8 minute mile; I’m very slow.”
It’s a skewed population as far as fitness is concerned. And very frustrating because I’m getting a lot of “wow, you’ve lost so much weight!” Ummm…. I had a BABY. I wasn’t fat, I was pregnant.
So today was a bit of vindication. Coming in 2nd (although I would have been 4th if our two fastest had been competing) was pretty good. The woman who won today called me ‘the dark horse.’ It was all in support and kindness, nothing malicious at all. It felt pretty good. She said, “Well look at you, the dark horse! I guess I never considered you to be a contender since you don’t work out with us.”
I thought it was rather funny considering I still ran this one 10 minutes slower than my fastest which would have been 2 minutes faster than the winning time. Here’s to slamming the fall tri.
So here is your (slightly) vain participant feeling a bit vindicated. And funny, I had 5 new people ask me about my PARK workouts today… =)
Now, for the race report:
- The swim was rough. It was in a pool and I’ve been able to lap swim 2 times in the last year. Luckily, I’m a fast side-stroker. Really I’d like to improve my swim. Our pool here does not open until 9am so practice is very difficult. I’d have to find childcare. Not easy in the world of no baby sitters. It wasn’t too bad, though, since my swim+transition was 15min.
- I borrowed a friend’s road bike and was able to cut 8 minutes off my last 20k bike workout. Fabulous! Everyone kept making a big deal of the wind at our backs on the big hill. Honestly, on the bike, the big hill isn’t so big. Plus, it’s less than .5k but the way the course is set, there’s a long, slow uphill with the wind in your face. Not sure where I’d rather have the wind! My bike time was pretty good, again considering I’ve only been on a bike a few times in the last year. I passed three other women on the course so I knew I was doing ok.
- My run went well. It was actually a 5.5k so my run time (34 min) was great. Coming in from the bike, as I said I knew I was doing ok, but then one of my friends said, “You are in 2nd place, GO!!!” I was SO excited! I was able to power through the first part of the run because the 3rd place woman was right behind me. She was slow to start and knowing I could get a good lead let me really put one foot in front of the other.
Not too shabby… from The Dark Horse!
